Thorogood, a brand with a rich heritage, has been crafting high-quality footwear since 1892. The company's story began when Albert H. Weinbrenner, at just 27 years old, opened a cobblery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, partnering with Joseph Peffer to serve the "Jobbing" trades. In 1900, the Albert H. Weinbrenner Co. was formally established, and the company's first catalog was printed in 1916, showcasing its industry-leading leather cutting capabilities.
The 1917 introduction of the "Job-fitted" concept marked a significant milestone, as Weinbrenner became a major contributor of boots to the U.S. Army during World War I. The company's foray into safety footwear production began in 1938, and by 1942, it had fully converted to manufacturing military footwear, both combat and dress styles, during World War II. This military footwear also gained popularity among civilian consumers.
In 1964, Weinbrenner introduced the iconic "Hike n' Camp" boot, which featured a wedge sole and moccasin-style stitching, and went on to become the company's best-selling boot of all time, still available today in its original design. The company was purchased by a local group, including six employees, in 1988, leading to the creation of the "ThoroGard" division, which focused on high-tech occupational safety footwear.
Weinbrenner celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1992 and, in 2000, the company's employees took ownership through an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Weinbrenner donated 300 pairs of durable work boots to Ground Zero within three days, with an additional 200 pairs following soon after. In 2014, the "1892 Heritage" line of handcrafted, lifestyle boots was introduced, and in 2017, the company celebrated its 125th anniversary with a renewed commitment to upgrading and improving its domestic facilities, machines, equipment, manufacturing methods, and computer systems/programs.
Today, Weinbrenner, now operating as Thorogood, continues to thrive, celebrating 130 years as a company in 2022 with the opening of a new factory in Merrill, Wisconsin, and the launch of its first western wear product, the Thorogood Square Toe Wellingtons. As Thorogood's popularity grows, the brand is expanding its product offerings, with many new styles on the horizon.
